I’m so excited to share this trip! The Maldives are unbelievably pristine, and even looking back at my photos feels indulgent. We flew from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. The Maldives are made of over 1,000 islands, of which 190 are inhabited and 211 are resort islands. Each resort boasts the over-water bungalows that the Maldives are known for, so how do you choose among literally hundreds of beautiful properties?? Luckily, my mother-in-law did the hard work on that one! Cocoon Maldives was absolutely perfect for our family.
A Cocoon representative meets you at the airport to facilitate your air transfer to the resort. Trans Maldivian Airways has to be booked independently, but it’s the only way to get to most resorts. (Several resorts are accessible by boat from Malé Airport.) The flight is less than an hour, and you start to see the stunning blue waters and islands sparkling beneath you…
Upon arrival, we were greeted with bubbly (and juice for the kids). The lovely Kids Club rep even brought Auden a little welcome bag! The Kids Club is complimentary, and children over 3 years old can hang out there with babysitters between meals (younger children must be accompanied). They have toys, games, space to play, shaded areas, arts and crafts, and water. It gives parents a few hours to do water sports, go to the spa, or just relax kid-free.
Snorkelling, paddle-boarding, kayaking and various other water sports are included with your stay. Scuba diving and other adventurous activities are available as well. Even on the snorkelling excursions, the fish were fantastic. We saw a sea turtle gliding gracefully beneath us! Manta rays come right up to the bungalows!
Now, for the food. We went with the all-inclusive package, and recommend it wholeheartedly. The main restaurant has 4 hot options being prepared on the spot in addition to the hot buffet; there are multiple salads as well as a build-your-own salad bar; plus breads, soups, fruit, kids options, and a whole room full of dessert. Not to mention free-flowing wine, of course.
The food was incredibly good, and the service is lovely. It’s SO kid-friendly, with high chairs and kind smiles for all the little ones. The only possible reason for dining at the other on-site restaurants is for a special, extra-romantic setup. For our family, the main restaurant was a home run!
As for the rooms, the over-water bungalows are huge, and you can step from your patio straight into the ocean. Our bungalow comfortably fit a king-sized bed, crib, and twin bed for Auden. The bathrooms are luxurious, with a large soaking tub and separate waterfall shower, also looking out to the water.
We really can’t recommend Cocoon enough, especially for families. The property is beautifully maintained and quite new; the food is fantastic; the service is perfect; and the childcare is the icing on the cake! The Maldives are really a piece of paradise. Hopefully, we’ll make our way back there!
